World of WordPress News and other interesting WordPress related posts:

WordPressfor iOS just got a big update as promised at Wordcamp San Francisco last week. It is a big improvement over the old app, with more of a twitter or Facebook app feel to it now with swiping the different sections of editing capabilities. I am a bit dismayed at the lack of a true WYSIWYG interface, reverting to HTML as the default. Still, it is a big lift from where the App was previously.

I have my review of it here http://www.johnoverall.com/the-new-wordpress-ios-app/

The Lowdown:
You know sometimes the old is still pretty good..
While some of the functionality of this plugin is provided in the WordPress core when you wish to add a link to a post not all of what this plugin does is available.
This plugin provides a great easy way to find links within your site as well as off site links to places such as Wikipedia. just a keyword or two and you're on your way. This is a simple plugin that you just install it adds a new window to your post dashboard and all you do is choose a keyword or two and choose where to find info your blog, images, videos, Wikipedia, Google, news, blogs or books. then it is just a click away to add the link.

WordPress Post Tabs 1.3.1

The Lowdown:
Ok here's the deal I was converting over a website that was done in old html and php on some proprietary system and they had the one page that used something like tabs. So I thought I would see how that could be done in WordPress. I found this plugin to be a great way of adding tabs to the site it was simple with just a short code to wrap the content into and then a little css to make the header look the way I wanted it to and it worked pretty smooth.

MU Plugin

  • Version: 2.2
  • Author: Deanna Schneider, Jason Lemahieu

  • Requires WordPress Version: 3.0 or higher
  • Compatible up to: 3.1.4
  • Downloaded: 20,082 times
  • WordPress.org Plugin Page »

The Lowdown:
Ok here is the deal I have a project I am working on which is deploying a MU platform and they wanted to have multiple blogs but they all need to conform to the master one. So I needed a simple way to duplicate the master blog and of course I do what i always do and that is find a great plugin to solve the problem. This plugin is great for duplicating just about everything and a couple of unique settings but it was missing the one main thing I wanted and that was the ability to duplicate the main site menu since it will be shared across all 30 sub blogs I did not want to manually create it that many times. All in all pretty great though.. Although I have found a premium plugin that might do the task I will let you know about it as soon as I install and test it.

DIV Layer Editor
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/div-layer-editor/

Requires: 3.0 or higher
Compatible up to: 3.3.2
Last Updated: 2012-6-7

This is the plugin for making changes to your themes. Edit any WordPress theme from the front of your website. Just click on a part of your website to edit it. Then save different versions of your themes as child themes.

Marcus’ Take:  This is a very interesting plugin that can be toggled off and on with the admin bar. When enabled, you can hover over different sections and components of your site and literally click to edit the CSS of that particular section. It lets you save different versions in case you screw something up or just want to run an A/B test. The issue I had was it didn’t always save with the changes I wanted every time. Pretty frustrating when you are in deep thought editing CSS and  you have to recreate that design ZEN all over again and try and remember what you just did. Looking forward to this being updated to have more horsepower or an alternate front-end CSS editing plugin.

WP Login Alerts

E-mails the site owner if anyone reaches or attempts to login to the site. Also shows the user names they attempt to login with.

This is a Security focused plug-in, which will send an email to the Administrator of the WordPress site each time login page is reached.

If someone attempts to login, it will also send the user name they tried logging in with, as well as their IP address, User-Agent, Timestamp, and the Referral URL.

If you see multiple attempts to login at times you are not logged on to the site, this means someone is attempting to brute force their way into your site, and you should ban the offending IP address from your site. Especially if they are trying multiple names, or sending them rapidly, one after another.

Marcus’ Take: This is a great feature to check and see if there are hooligans trying to get in your site. Nice that it tells you the name they try and use as well.

Dashboard Feed Widget

Requires: 3.0 or higher
Compatible up to: 3.4.1
Last Updated: 2012-8-13

The Dashboard Feed Widget shows the latest Posts from a site of your choice in the top of the WordPress Dashboard.

Marcus’ Take: I know we had a listener call for this a few months back and had to provide a solution for this via some code hacking. I’m pleased to say that this is now available in a plugin.
