There are basically three types of spam that hist a WordPress website:

  1. Comment Spammers
  2. Registration Spammers
  3. Log-in Spammers

Stopping all of those can be a bit of a challenge but as I said the correct combination of plugins will hold them off just fine. I have found a combination of four plugins that works well together to keep your site clean. But first a bit of background about the types of spammers.

For log-in spammers these you have to deal with in some way since turning off login to your site is not a possibility, yes you can move or obfuscate your login url but that is only a temp fix until they find the url again. Security by obscurity is limited in its ability to help.

Registration spammers can be halted by simply turning off registration on your site, but if you offer anything for sale or some member function you will need this on so you need a way to deal with it.

Comment spammers the same thing you can turn off comments but we all know how valuable comments are for not only getting feedback but the SEO advantage of good comments is immense.

So what do you do? Well you can add the following plugins to your site to stop almost all attempts at spamming you.

Flip It On Spammers! Be The Aggressor – The Spam Hammer

This plugin stops spammers by allowing you to block all access from countries and continents as well as adding a countdown timer to the submit button on forms. The slows them down and prevents certian areas from commenting at all.

Stop Media Comment Spamming

This plugin stops all comenting on media/image attachment pages which is an often forgotten area. Since WordPress default is to allow commenting on those pages but it is ery seldom that you even want comments there this is a great plugin to simply stop that.

AntiSpam Bee

This plugin is the best by far of any comment spam stopper. It is very simple to use can be a bit agressive at times but so worh it Just a few suple clicks away from full functioing and stopping 99% of all spam comments it is great check this video on how to use it.

To date it has been the most successful plugin in stopping the spammer registrations that I have tried. It uses access to several black list and the ability to create your own list and more. It does a fantastic job of stopping those spam registrations cold. Check this video on how to use it.
