John's Intro:

Make sure to have a look at the new system for submitting art work for the show https://wppluginsatoz.com/artwork/. You can also view the art work from the past. Currently you can see all the submissions for Episode 500 here https://wppluginsatoz.com/show-art-submitted/ and you can even vote on the art work.

Just a reminder we are now in the 51st week of 2 weeks to flatten the curve from the Rona. The greatest Scam perpetrated on the entire world at once. Prepare now for the annual holiday of only 2 weeks to flatten the curve.

With great appreciation for the No Agenda Show for their inspiration of ideas and the occasional stolen sound clip.

This is a value for value show and I look forward to everyone providing some value back.

Before I get started, you will want to hang around to the end of the show for our Q & A segment with Amber…. and to those listening on the podcast, you may want to check out the YouTube version which has some great discussions before the show starts…

The first episode of our podcast is here https://www.johnoverall.com/inaugural-podcast-wordpress-plugins-a-to-z/ tune in near the end for some nostalgia about where the show has come from.

Ambers Rant:

This is #10 of 52 episodes for 2021. Its Episode 502! Slowly making our way towards 600!

I don't know how many people out there are interested in what goes on in the sky above us, but I am a total star geak. And I am rather excited about this asteroid that will be passing by us on March 21! I spent hours searching for some sort of plugin that would allow us to place the information direct from NASA or from somewhere into our sites – and although I found about 9, NONE of them were operational/working. Not even the ones direct from NASA worked right. VERY disappointing. If someone out there knows about a plugin that would show you even just the night sky that is still operational, please let me know. I love watching the night sky, I have a couple of apps on my phone and everything.

Although, I don't even look at my phone night sky apps when I go into my zone out space I gotta have at least an hour a day without any sort of media around. I have found it helps a lot with the mental fatigue of life. Best way to do it, is to retreat from the world to under a blanket, curl up on the couch, listen to some shows with no news hours, or to an audio book! Drinks, warm or cold – those help too.

And remember – don't be afraid to tell your kids to bugger off for an hour – it's totally allowed to demand they not bother you unless they are broken, dying, or bleeding for the entirety of the hour! Maybe help them to create their own zone out spaces, than walk away quietly while they are ‘arranging' it – you will more than likely get about an hour all to yourself this way. Just don't crumple any chip or cookie bags….

Remember, remove all social media and main stream news for your own mental health! Do this for an hour a day.

Rinse and repeat as often as needed.

We have some news from the world of WordPress for you today as well as some great plugins.

ClassicPress Options

ClassicPress is a fast growing fork of WordPress that is starting to come into its own. ClassicPress is focused on Business Websites, runs fast and is looking pretty good. There are a few plugins specifically for ClassicPress and all plugins for WordPress 4.9.9 work well on it. I do believe it has a future.

One thing I am looking forward to in the ClassicPress World is the expansion of the number of ClassicPress specific plugins and their own repository. Currently there are not a lot of ClassicPress specific plugins but I do know it is going to grow and I'll have to expand this segment then. Who knows, it could take over the whole show.

This week for ClassicPress I have:

Description

This is a nice and easy, simple to use, ‘book meeting' button.

You have a few options on how you want the button to look, where you want it to show up, and you simply put the link into the options page for the plugin.

Seems to be a freemium plugin, and is really awesomely easy to use. Great for people just starting with a website!
Really not much else to say about it – simple and easy, does what it is supposed to.

I had mentioned a plugin atoz Canada Post in episode 501 but when I went to use it, it had issues so I am dropping its rating to 2 dragons.

The Lowdown:

I needed to get all setup on my ecom store over at the Tavern for easy shipping calculations and after the first plugin I wanted to use had a big fail, I went looking for a new one.

This one works great and does have a premium version but the free version works great, just no control over the output text.

You do need a Canada Post account but that is pretty normal.

Description

This plugin is a site tracker – keeps records of the activity on your site and sends you logs of it. Hence the name. This is a fairly fresh plugin that is nicely kept up.

These guys (unfortunately for them) got a point removed right away from me, due to the fact that in order to get it fully working you need to make an account with them on their site. I don't like that – in my opinion, once you have the plugin installed, that should be where it works from, not from the creators site. I understand why, they need that information to make their own stuff better. But I don't like it.

Their plugin has some really good options I have to admit. You can be as ‘watchful' as you like, right down to recording the login names to see specifically who is doing what on your site.

You are able to customize log events, and you are able to keep every log you receive if you so desire, so as to have it on hard copy.

If you are needing to understand what's most popular and what is least popular on your site, what you need to work on and so forth, this would be a good free plugin to go with.

So long as you don't mind having to create an account on their site with them of course.

The Lowdown:

Well, I was exited to be able to waste some time playing Solitaire on my website but alas the plugin seemed to have failed. I tired it on a couple of websites with no avail. They do mention that it is dependent on their website, which seems to work ok but the plugin failed.

Of course I am a firm believer in no free lunch, so hard to figure what the catch is.

Related to Bacon Ipsum, this is another unique Ipsum plugin! I know I certainly get bored of the same fake writing all the time… and I tell you what, mix this or Bacon Ipsum with the Ye Old Pirate plugin, and you will have a fantastic time reading what you get!

Just plug it in, throw in the short code, choose your mix – or put in your own words – and let her rip!
Totally free, certainly made MY evening more enjoyable.

Highly recommend you go and check this out.
