Leaning Into WordPress Plugins

Leaning Into WordPress Plugins

John's Intro:

It's Episode 615 and we have plugins for  Importing or Exporting, Just disabling it all… and WordPress News. It's all coming up on WordPress Plugins A-Z!

– ‘good morning, good afternoon, good evening, wherever you happen to be hiding out there on the globe today! Coming to you LIVE from …'

Amber's Rant:

Welcome to Episode 615 – Leaning Into WordPress Plugins  We've got a couple of great in-depth plugins to cover for you, some recent news in both the WordPress World and the Tech World in general, and some awesome WordPress Tips!

Hoping everyone dealing with the rain at this time of year is keeping warm and dry! We have started taking our tinctures and vitamin regiments ourselves – turns out, my older human in training REAAALLLLLLLYY does not like echinacea tincture – she complained about it for quite a while after trying to drink it in tea. Gotta love it when stuff that's good for you tastes bad – that's when you know it's working! Also it's kinda fun torturing the teens…

A few reminders before we start the show today….

Reminders:

  • A head up for those who missed the announcement last show, we will be continuing on with the show happening every other week. We figured we should just go with it rather then cancelling every other week – so our next show will be on November 27th, 2023.
  • Remember that the show starts at 12:30 PM Pacific Time, with a pre-stream starting around 12:15 PM Pacific Time. Pre-stream is where we twiddle with the dials and knobs and really just warm up our voices, so join in for some entertainment value!
  • Our show notes for each episode can be found at wppluginsatoz.com – the newest show notes will be up within 24 hours and on our front page!
  • Don't forget that this is a value for value show, and that you are a big part of it's creation! You are our producers, and we need you to help us produce! Get out there and hit some like buttons, share an episode or two, and let people know that you help to produce the longest running WordPress Plugins podcast!

That's it for reminders, don't forget to stick around until the end of the show for some possibly life altering advice!

...When you see this in the notes, it means we didn't read this on the show. The only way to find this information out is to read our Show Notes!

…You can send any questions/suggestions or notes saying ‘hi' over to me at amber@wppro.ca, or hit up our site wpppluginsatoz.com/contact – Be creative with the title so that the spammer eater doesn't eat your note though!

Let's start the show with this weeks Featured Artist:

Artist:

jsaliba

I don't know if anyone else sees this – but when you look at that leaning tower – can't you just imagine a giant marble going down it like those Duplo creations as kids?

Going through the Art Vaults is awesome, but we would love some new art! You can send it into us at https://wppluginsatoz.com/artwork/. You can also check out the art vaults yourself there too!

…We can NEVER have too much art!

Breaking News in the WordPress World at large!!

…If I missed something, shoot me a link at amber@wppro.ca – it may show up on the next show!

News this week:

WordPress Vulnerability Report – November 8, updated November 9th, 2023
(https://solidwp.com/blog/wordpress-vulnerability-report-november-8-2023/) – Of the 109 security vulnerabilities publicly disclosed in WordPress Plugins 79 patches have been made available, so be sure to run those asap! There are still as of Nov. 9th 30 vulnerabilities with no patch. Be sure to check this list to see if you are at risk.

Some I most easily recognize are: Login Screen Manager, wp-bitly, Social Feed | All social media in one place, Ninja Forms Contact Form – The Drag and Drop Form Builder for WordPress, AI ChatBot, and EventPrime – Ecents Calendar, Bookings and Tickets. Follow the link in our shownotes to see the full list.

WordPress 6.4.1 fixes a critical cURL/Requests bug
(https://wptavern.com/wordpress-6-4-1-fixes-a-critical-curl-requests-bug) – See, this is why we always say to wait a bit before upgrading to the newest major release – and DON'T allow auto updates for major releases! The main critical bug they managed to fix within 24 hours comes from a change in the Requests library, causing problems with updates on servers running older versions of cURL. There were also issues with the REST API in site health, and prevented WordPress plugin and core updates, basically anything that relied on internal cURL handler in WordPress was going buggy. If your site has this going on, manually update to 6.4.1, and it will fix it for you. You can follow the link and read the article in more depth for yourself – but really, this is why we suggest you wait until a major update gets to about version .3. By about .3, any bugs are pretty minor.

WordPress contributors target upcoming 6.5 release for merging performant translations into core
(https://wptavern.com/wordpress-contributors-target-upcoming-6-5-release-for-merging-performant-translations-into-core) – WordPress' performance team is proposing merging Performant Translations into core in time for the upcoming WordPress 6.5 release. Earlier this year there was a performance analysis revealing that translations can significantly impact server response times – though they seem to have hopefully discovered a way to make the impact as little as possible. Performance Team contributor Pascal Birchler explains it this way:

“Performant Translations is powered by a new, lightweight i18n library that is faster at loading binary MO files and uses less memory. It even supports loading multiple locales at the same time, which makes locale switching faster. In addition to that, it supports translations contained in PHP files, avoiding a binary file format and leveraging OPCache if available. If an MO translation file has a corresponding PHP file, the latter will be loaded instead, making things even faster and use even less memory.”

To learn more about this, you can follow the link here in our show notes.

WooCommerce rebrands to Woo
(https://wptavern.com/woocommerce-rebrands-as-woo) – This is a good thing for people to be aware of – the name we have all come to know so well is rebranding to the shorter version of their name. The rebranding extends to the Woo Marketplace, WooExperts program, and all other aspects of the Woo experience. It also includes a migration of WooCommerce.com to the woo.com domain. So for those who use Woo, be aware of this change so you are not taken by surprise!

Newspack Plugin update checker lets users update from GitHub
(https://wptavern.com/newspack-plugin-update-checker-lets-users-update-from-github) – This is pretty awesome! Adam Schweigert has released a plugin called Newspack Plugin Update Checker that enables self-hosted newspack users to keep their plugins up-to-date. The newspack project was launched in 2019 by WordPress.com with support from the Google News Initiative, the Knight Foundation, and The Lenfest Institute. I think this is an important thing to know about because I have watched as GitHub is becoming the place more and more for developers to go to put their fixes on plugins, the place to go for answers, etc. So now, there is a direct link from wordpress.com to GitHub to keep your plugins updated – I foresee GitHub becoming a more often used platform for many things like this in the future. Perhaps soon GitHub will be the place to go to find any and all plugins that are really truly helpful.

WordPress 2024 roadmap: 3 major releases with a focus on collaboration features
(https://wptavern.com/wordpress-2024-roadmap-3-major-releases-with-a-focus-on-collaboration-features) – There has been a proposed schedule for 2024 released by WordPress Executive Director Josepha Haden Chomphosy. No dates have been chiselled out into the stoneworks as of yet, but they have been planning to avoid major holidays and WordPress events. The first release of the year is planned for March 26, followed by 6.6 in July, and 6.7 in early November. If you want to read more about this, you can follow the links here in our show notes.

Wordfence launches Bug Bounty Program
(https://wptavern.com/wordfence-launches-bug-bounty-program) – Wordfence launched a bug bounty program on November 9th as a way to provide financial incentive for security researches reporting high risk vulnerabilities to the company's program. There is no cap on the rewards an individual researcher can earn, and every single in-scope vulnerability received through the submissions process will earn a reward bounty. A few examples of the payouts are:

  • $1,600 for an unauthenticated Arbitrary File Upload, a Remote Code Execution, a Privilege Escalation to Admin, or an Arbitrary Options Update in a plugin or theme with over one million active installations.
  • $1,060 for an Unauthenticated Arbitrary File Deletion in a plugin or theme with over one million active installations, assuming wp-config.php can easily be deleted.
  • $800 for an Unauthenticated SQL Injection in a plugin or theme with over one million active installations.
  • $320 for an Unauthenticated Cross-Site Scripting vulnerability in a plugin or theme with over one million active installations.
  • $80 for a Cross-Site Request Forgery vulnerability in a plugin or theme with over one million active installations, and a significant impact.

May be something worth looking into if you have these kinda mad skills and would like a little extra cash!

WordPress Tips

We would love to hear some tid bit tips from some of our producers out there – what did you figure out by breaking something? Or what did you need to learn in order to help someone? You can send these tid bits into me at amber@wppro.ca

Making Sites

This one is a little less about actual creation, more about how sometimes finding life getting in the way of completing something for a client.

Don't try to bullshit your client – just tell them the truth. Your parent is in hospital, or you caught a devastating illness from your human in training and you just can't do anything for a couple of days, or whatever it is that is going on.

If you try and bullshit your client, they WILL catch on – however, if you tell them the actual truth, well, they are human and have had life throw some curveballs at them too and so will very likely be more inclined to offer patience and understanding.

If your client gets frustrated and fires you for being human – well, that may well be a blessing in disguise – because what would have happened if you wound up in hospital yourself after a crash or something – would they expect you to get their stuff done then as well? Being human is part of the reason you were hired – but if they can't accept that you are human for both the worst and the best, then they are not going to be very good clients.

Not every client is going to make or break you.

Beginners Tips

When we take that first step into the working world, we all try to make sure that everyone likes us, that we don't screw up. Then we alllll find out pretty fast that there is always a jerk on site who won't like you for whatever reason, and that you are gonna screw up loads because really that's how we learn and get better.

This industry is no different – although it seems that some people either just don't get this, or they forget this.

Because this industry is so very much online, we have the ability to put on just about any persona, re-read our emails a bajillion times before sending it off, and we have the opportunity to sway others opinions about ourselves to quite a bit of an extreme.

Because of this, we sorta forget that there is always a jerk on site who isn't going to like you for whatever reason no matter what you do, and we forget that we need to screw up in order to really get better and learn some more.

This isn't a chat room or FaceBook where you are gonna get likes and where you can throw up a different persona to everyone to make sure they all like you – this is still work. You are still in the workforce, and you still gotta deal with the jerks.

So when you deal with them, accept it and push forward. Let it roll off your back the same way you did that jerk in highschool or that first really crap job you had. They are who they are, and there is no reason to try and change it – it's jut the work industry.

Don't forget that, and you will find it much easier to deal with those people.

The Lowdown:

This plugin was brought to our attention by a representative of Smackcoders named Jiju (hopefully I pronounced their name right). I enjoyed getting a chance to chat with them! This week I am going to be reviewing their free plugin, then next show I will be reviewing their Premium version of this. If you come back for our next show, you will learn how to save a bit of money on the premium version if you decide this plugin is something worth grabbing!

Admittedly finding this particular plugin is a little harder then it should be – I blame the search engine by WordPress for it. Seems that you have to be VERY exact when searching for any plugin, and sometimes even that does not get you what you are looking for! Best option is to copy and past from our shownotes, then the plugin pops up as first.

Once I installed and activated this plugin, it took me directly to the plugin's dashboard which was very helpful! You will find the dashboard for the plugin in your lefthand menu labeled as ‘Ultimate CSV Importer Free'.

The first area you are brought to is the ‘Manage Addons' option – which confused me a little at first because I have tested out plugins where the plugin does not run unless you add all of these other addons in the past – and for a moment I thought perhaps that was what this was about. But no, you don't need these addons for the plugin to run. These addons are options that are available, not required. However they ARE useful – I ran the plugin without them, then I added them one by one, and realized that more options became available, and for those who have WooCommerce, Users, or who need to export from this site to another these addons are very good and free to grab and use.

To get to the regular dashboard, click on ‘Ultimate CSV Importer Free'.

Here you will see a whole lot of options! Along the very top there are the tabs Dashboard, Import, Manager, Export, Settings, Addons, Support.

Centered below those you will see Simple Mode, and Advanced.

Of those two, you will find yourself on ‘Import', and ‘Advanced'.

I like that they start you off here because immediately you see the option to import from your desktop. This is awesome I think because really a lot of people will be uploading from an external hard drive, so this makes it really easy!

Right away though, I noticed the option to FTP. I clicked on it and was surprised to see that you can literally do an FTP from inside this plugin, and just bring in the information you want! SO useful! I personally use FTP pretty well all the time, so this was a pretty easy way for me to go.

Now there is another option here where it says ‘upload from URL' – I have never done that before. That was an interesting one to try out.

Under Simple Mode, you can simply drag and drop files over into the box. Very simple and straightforward, I like it!

I'm going to go through all the tabs along the top, so it's gonna be a little long – but trust me, each one has got great things going for it.

Dashboard: here, you will see 2 graphs. The top one is ‘Importers Activity', the bottom one is ‘Import Statistics'. This is good information to know, especially if you are keeping an eye on another persons site for them and using this plugin.

I already covered Import, so onto Manager: Here we have ‘Log Manager', ‘File Manager', and ‘Templates'. The second two are only for pro – kinda sucks when the developers put it there and block it – but these guys at least label it so you don't expect it to work. Just enough to tease ya!

‘Log Manager' records what you have done thus far with the plugin so you don't have to guestimate.

Export: So long as you have grabbed up the addon, installed and activated it, you will have the option to export. Just a quick note – if you don't install the addon right away, you will have to go and separately add the plugin. Under the Export option, you choose which module you want to export – posts, post taxonomies, comments, etc. Hit ‘next', and you are able to give the CSV file a name, choose export style between CSV, XLS, XML, or JSON. You also have the option of 2 of the advanced filters: export data for the specific period, or export data by specific authors. There are 4 more options that are part of the premium version.

Settings: General: you have Drop Table, Scheduled log mails, Send password to user, Woocommerce Custom Attribute, and Delete WordPress data. These all have a description and some have a bit of a warning on them so you think before you activate.

Database Optimization is a pro feature, though we have Security and Performance: Here you are able to review the minimum required Php.lni values, and what's required to enable/disable loaders, extensions and modules. You can't change any of this, but it's good information to look over.

And then there is the Documentation – which is also good information to go over. I like that they make the documentation easily accessible.

Then we have our addons, where you can pick and choose which addons to add – although I don't see an option to remove addon from there, so you will have to go and do it individually from the plugins page.

And last we have the Support tab. Here you can reach out to support – I really like that they offer this to both their free users and their premium users. Some plugin developers are only willing to accept direct requests for help from their premium users, and that can be frustrating for those like myself who are setting things up for others, and those others don't necessarily want to the premium version or can afford it.

Kind of cool, you can also sign up for their newsletter here too! I have never seen that combo before in a plugin, only on sites.

Overall, this is a pretty awesome plugin for bringing in stuff from another site – you can use this to transfer from one to another, or you can use this for when you need to post to more than one site at a time like we do! The free version would do you great if you are only using it for basic transferring of some files, though you may want to think about the premium version for full site transfers, or even large loads of data being transferred for whatever reason.

Next show I'll be covering the premium version – it will be a little less windy 'cause I have already covered all the basics, so we will just be going over the premium attributes.

Thanks for the help!

Q & A Time with Amber – Catch this info on our YouTube Channel

If you have questions you would like to have asked on the show, send them in to me at Amber@WPPro.ca – let's see if we can stump my dad!

  • How is a password program more secure then allowing the browser to save the information for you?
    • What securities are the programs using that the browser is not?

Questions asked after closing credits:

  • What can tip you off that a password program you are looking at is actually not all that great of an investment?
  • Is it a good practice to have a locally saved password list, or should you keep it entirely on your cloud?
