This is a value for value show and I look forward to everyone providing some value back.

Ambers' Rant:

This is #28 of 52 episodes for 2021. Its Episode 520, and if you haven't gotten outside and gotten a little bit of a tan by now, grab your shoes and get out there!

If you really can't get outside for an extended walk, find a spot near your house to just sit in the sun. Bring your lunch outside and soak in some of that vitamin D! It will help you feel more energetic, more relaxed. And remember that, when you're drinking water, you also need salt in order to hold on to that water in your body. Add some salt to your lemonade, you can't taste it and it works well!

I think we should enjoy this summer as much as we can – we haven't had a summer like this in a really long time, and we may not get another one for long while. And on that note, don't let that social media/news wreck your day, turn it off for at least an hour a day. I'll bet you a beer it will help!

Rinse and repeat as often as needed.

We have some news from the world of WordPress for you today as well as some great plugins.

News this week:

Gutenberg 11.0 with over 70 bug fixes – A lot of good things for the most recent update of the Gutenberg; great article going over the writers favourites, with a link to the ‘release notes‘ so you can read through all of the updates.

WooCommerce Patches Critical Vulnerability, Sending Forced Security Update from WordPress.org
https://wptavern.com/woocommerce-patches-critical-vulnerability-sending-forced-security-update-from-wordpress-org

Query Loop Block to come – in the next update of WordPress – this will keep the loops at bay.

InstaWP launching service for Disoposable WordPress Testing Sites – I can see this being extraordinarily valuable. I hope this new service works out!

WordPress fixed their Google issue – they were having issues where an in site page was showing up on Google when people were searching for how to download WordPress. Interesting article, perhaps some who are dealing with the same sort of thing might be able to pick up a few tricks.

Facebook and AT&T team up for an augmented reality experience – this should be interesting to follow!

This is the extra news stuff that someone out there might find interesting. To read more, you can head on over to the show notes or newsletter and check it out! If you find something to add for next show, send me a link at amber@wppro.ca

The extras – for even more extra news, check out our Facebook, or Twitter page!

Jetpack 9.9 releases Refreshed Image Gallery Carousel – the update has made it smoother and much nicer to use. This is a good article going over the pro's and con's of this most recent update.

Tips Tuesday with MayAnna – Excellent week for tips!

Contributing to Open Source better than any college degree – which I can see, being able to show the work you have already done is more valuable than just saying what you have learned. Major difference between doing and knowing.

Mari Bros.3 is now in a museum… – well, don't I feel old now!

Ring's end to end encryption rolled out this last week – this is for the doorbell image capture. Good to know if this is one of the tech gadgets you currently use!

Amazon has acquired Facebooks satellite internet team – this could mean that big changes are coming to Amazon! Amazon has had a goal of catching up to SpaceX's Starlink broadband constellation, we shall see what happens.

ClassicPress Options

ClassicPress is growing really well, but I just don't have the time to add reviews on ClassicPress myself. I am always open to reviews sent in by listeners; though unless there is a review sent into me on ClassicPress, I am not going to do more than mention that ClassicPress is a thing, and here are some resources. I hope some listeners out there find this information useful!

One thing I am looking forward to in the ClassicPress World is the expansion of the number of ClassicPress specific plugins and their own repository. There are a few plugins specifically for ClassicPress and all plugins for WordPress 4.9.9 work well on it. I do believe it has a future, I just have not time to help them in getting it out there.

ClassicPress Resources:

For some up to date news on ClassicPress check out the ClassicPress Blog.

“Must Have” Plugins List

It seems ClassicPress now has it own repository you can check it here https://directory.classicpress.net/plugins they now have 72 plugins available.

John's Plugin

Index WP MySQL For Speed

https://wordpress.org/plugins/index-wp-mysql-for-speed/

Version:1.4.17

Released:13 June 2021

Last Updated:04 April 2024
Ratings:
4.8
(4.8 star out of 5)

The lowdown:

This is a bit of a risky plugin, so be sure you make a full backup of your site and the database and to be sure do it twice.

This plugin modifies your database keys to make indexing faster. This can be a major benefit to larger sites with lots of data in them. The modification is permanent once done, and you can even remove the plugin after you have run it. So be sure to make that backup.

Amber's Plugin

Contact and social sticky bar

The Lowdown:

I have to admit that I was a little dubious when I first saw this one – it seemed like one of those plugins that would tell you how easy it was to use when it was actually a bit of a pain to use.

But really, it was super easy to use! It's a great little plugin!

And the sticky bar for the top is also very nice looking. You can put any content you want into it, make it just about any colour, and you can make the bar as thick or thin as you like.

You can also put different content on the left and right side, center it, change up the colour of the font itself – there is lots you can do with this freemium plugin.

If you are looking for an easy to use sticky bar plugin, give this one a go!

The lowdown:

This is an easy way to add additional content to your WooCommerce invoices. You could use this to promote discounts, add a special, and more! Pretty much the sky's the limit on how you could use it. All you need is to have an imagination. You can even use html in the boxes.

The Lowdown:

This plugin seemed like an interesting idea – anchoring all of your H2 headers.

Unfortunately, this plugin seems to crash any posts done with Elementor – I tried this on a few different sites.

Now, it seems to work properly with regular editing, so I believe it will work with Gutenberg – if you use Elementor, this plugin won't work for you. you can't open your posts anymore. Though you can use it otherwise.

May be a good thing for the developers to list for everyone up front.

The Lowdown:

These guys have an awesome opening for their description! That is honestly what caught me and got me to try it.
And when I was playing with the settings, its brilliant! Easy to use, and you can literally choose ANY colour you want for your little back to top sticky button.

There is a little area on the right that gives you a preview of what the little back to top button will look like – there are a lot of shapes to choose from, you can choose the size (big, medium or small), where it goes (left, right, or middle) – there are loads of options.

I am still very much into plugins that allow you to totally personalize the options!

Totally free, totally awesome, if you are in the market for a back to top sticky button than check these guys out!!

Listener Questions

Hi John,
Thank you (and Amber) for reading my question regarding sites portfolio “on the air” the other week. It was after I listened that I wasn't really asking the question(s) the right way. So I thought I'd bounce them off of you directly.

What I meant to ask was…

Question #1. If you have a graphics business, and you want to start doing websites (WordPress) for people, how have you gotten your clients?

I realize that's an open-ended question. Obviously you've been doing this for a long time, so you have a large number of sites you could showcase on a portfolio page on your site. But what if you didn't have any website clients yet?

This reminds me of a side business I'm doing here in Dallas, Texas where I do headlight restoration. I needed a “portfolio” of before-and-after examples to put on my website. I offered to a few neighbors and friends to do their headlights for free (if they wanted to give me something, that was fine). This gave me the examples I needed, as well as increased my experience and confidence.

Question #2: Is there a big market out there for “WordPress websites”, and therefore, WordPress developers?

Thanks in advance!

****Q & A Time with Amber ——– Catch this info on our YouTube Channel*****

Questions and Answers

*** Note if you have questions you would like asked, send them to Amber at WPPro.ca she will get them into this segment. ****

  • Do you know anything about working on sites offline?
    • If so, how does that work?
    • What do you think the kinks would be in getting the work you have done offline to online?
  • Faster internet would be good – but how fast is fast enough? I have noticed that all the big tech companies are in a race to get better broadband and satellite internet. Do you think more satellites will accomplish their goal? Or is there something else that has to be done in order to speed up the internet, or get it reaching further and what not?
  • A listener mentioned to me the following:
“Even if you have the gigabit internet, it really depends on your devices as to whether or not you are able to grab more than 300mbs. And then there is also the matter of how many devices you have pulling from your internet at the same time as to whether or not you are able to use much of that gigabit internet.”So my question for you is:

    • Is there a way to help your lower end computer in grabbing more internet (basically upgrading) WITHOUT having to spend nearly an arm and a leg (or your firstborn child) in actual tech upgrading?
  • I've noticed that there are a lot of jobs for coders lately – I can't help but wonder if we are starting to lose people for creating computers, like we did with radios and VHS. What is your take on that?
