Ambers' Rant:

This is #37 of 52 episodes for 2021! Add the numbers 37, 52, and 2021 together and you get 4 – which is neat because we are heading into the 4th season of the year. I hope that everyone is all prepped up for winter! Be sure to start pulling out those sweaters and heavy coats and those lovely rubber boots! After such an amazing summer, we are almost certain to have a really cold winter – seems to be that way every time.

Remember to pull yourself off of the media for at least an hour a day – get those kids off too before they start getting stuck on the idea of what they want for X-mas before we have even passed Halloween! Also, removal of media is always sure to get true conversation going.

Rinse and repeat as often as needed.

We have some news from the world of WordPress for you today as well as some great plugins.

News this week:

A Web Font API Possibly Coming to WordPress – This proposal would allow developers to register fonts from local files or a stylesheet URL like those provided by Google Fonts and other third-party API's directly into the WordPress Core. Definitely an exciting prospect for WordPress!

Keanan Koppenhaver Acquires WP Pusher and Branch – For those who use WP Pusher, be aware! There may be changes in the near future – hopefully not, but we know that when plugins are acquired, sometimes they change – and not always for the better.

Awesome Motive Acquires Sandhills Development – For those who use Awesome Motive plugin, be aware! Hopefully any changes that show up will all be for the better. Read the article for more information.

DropBox drops new screen and video capture tool – This could be extraordinarily helpful for those that need to take screen captures and videos! Read all about it here for more information!

Twitter fell off the bandwagon for a few hours – The issue was dealt with within a few hours, but the fact that Twitter went down for a bit had massive impacts on many people and businesses. Remember not to rely on any one social media forum, use many for just this reason!

Report highlights cybersecurity dangers of Elastic Stack implementation mistakes – For those that use Elastic, this is a good article to go through. There are always dangers with third party's, but sometimes the dangers are a little more than others. Researchers Salt Security: “discovered issues that allowed them to not only launch attacks where any user could extract sensitive customer and system data but also allowed any user to create a denial of service condition that would render the system unavailable. ”

Amazon tells Tesla to hold its beer in contest for stupidest-robot-ever-built – Entertaining review on Amazon's most recent robo-build. And they kinda have a good point…

The extras – for even more extra news, check out our Facebook, or Twitter page!

This is the extra news stuff that someone out there might find interesting. To read more, you can head on over to the show notes or newsletter and check it out! If you find something to add for next show, send me a link at amber@wppro.ca

WooCommerce Marks 1- Year Anniversary of Forking Jigoshop – iI has been 10 years of going strong! Good on them! This goes over how it was created, what it has done, and what it does now for those interested.

TNW's report on why Developers hate WordPress, and why Marketers should too – Even if you don't agree with this, this still offers up some good information on different platforms that you can look into, and some of the issues that many are unaware of before entering into WordPress. Always good to look at both sides of the coin before making a decision!

Beethoven never finished his 10th Symphony. Computer scientists just did – Just a fun article with some interesting info! Pretty cool!

96% of third-party container applications deployed in cloud infrastructure contain known vulnerabilities: Unit 42 – Palo Also Networks' Unit 42 outlines the ways that a supply chain has become an emerging cloud security threat in this article. Worth looking through if you use a lot of third party things.

Researchers discover bypass ‘bug' in iPhone Apple Pay, Visa to make contactless payments – UK academics have uncovered mobile security issues in Visa and Apple payment mechanisms that could result in fraudulent contactless payments. If this is something you use in your business or personally, worth looking over to learn the dangers, and decide whether or not the risks are worth it.

When the email scam originates inside your walls – Basic run down of how the email scammers do their magic, and what to do in response.

US and EU to cooperate on tech standards, supply chain security and tech development – Good news for those that are waiting in line to get the bits of tech that are made of the materials that are in short supply since last summer! This is a run down of the agreement they are making, and how they plan on keeping an eye on how sensitive technologies are used.

Legal framework for artificial intelligence advances in Brazil – Congress passed a bill that outlines guidelines for public policies and principles to be followed by companies, which now needs to be voted by the Senate. If you have connections to Brazil, this will be a good thing to look at.

ClassicPress Options

ClassicPress is growing really well, but I just don't have the time to add reviews on ClassicPress myself. I am always open to reviews sent in by listeners; though unless there is a review sent into me on ClassicPress, I am not going to do more than mention that ClassicPress is a thing, and here are some resources. I hope some listeners out there find this information useful!

One thing I am looking forward to in the ClassicPress World is the expansion of the number of ClassicPress specific plugins and their own repository. There are a few plugins specifically for ClassicPress and all plugins for WordPress 4.9.9 work well on it. I do believe it has a future, I just have not time to help them in getting it out there.

The Lowdown:

In the world of today, we can use a little lightening of the load. This plugin is for those which to call upon the Saints. What it will do is display a Saint of the day for you. This plugin uses the US Catholic version of the Saints. You can also tie it to the Liturgical Day of the Week plugin and add some colour.

Landing Page Builder – Free landing Page Templates

The Lowdown:

Not cool man. This is supposed to make building a landing page way easier – and sure, you can BUILD a landing page no problem! Though it's a little odd… you HAVE to use one of their templates, and then you can't keep anything you are wanting on the page except for whatever styling you got going on in your header and footer – not even your own header and footer. Also, you only get to choose from 2 options in the free version – and they are both the same, just one has a larger background picture for your header.

When you go to USE said landing page, it goes up as you made it, no sidebars allowed, no additions allowed, no nothing. ONLY what is in the template that you have no choice but to use….

Also, interesting thing I learned, once it is set as your home page, even if your page is under construction or set as a ‘404 error' like my sandbox page is, anyone can find you. I was able to have my mom in the USA visit and view the site so long as that page was set as my home page.

The only options you get in the free version is to set it as your home page, include the styling for header, or footer, or any combination of the three.

If the pro version is any better, then perhaps they should give you a taste of it before demanding money eh? Not cool in my opinion. Also, really slows down your entire browser when you are trying to set everything up. I had to reset my modem to get things moving at a normal pace again.

The Lowdown:

If you're building websites for clients, you know the pain of explaining the Admin interface to them from time to time. This plugin can help eliminate many of those pains. Once installed, setup, and configured, you can have a tour though the admin interface for your clients so they can find their way around. By using the custom filters for the plugin you can create your own tour, customize the steps, and more.

The Lowdown:

This is another Landing page plugin.

Reminds me a lot of Divi editing…. They tell you that you have the option to ‘edit' the page within their own editor when you are creating your own page/post – but then when you transfer over to it, it seems to simply delete whatever you have put down already rather than transferring it like Elementor, and you need to either choose a blank or a template to start working on.

Which is set up like Divi. I am NOT fond of Divi… but at least it doesn't have all the same kind of glitches I experienced with Divi. These guys keep it moving nice and smoothly – so long as you remember to clear your cache regularly.

The free version gives you loads of templates to choose from, as well as a blank page. I like that a lot. You also have access to loads of easy to use widgets for in their editor area.

Honestly, I like this one. It is fairly easy to use, and simple to figure out. Their free version is pretty awesome, so I would assume that their pro version is pretty nifty as well.

Nimble Page Builder

https://wordpress.org/plugins/nimble-builder/

Version:3.3.7
Requires:4.7 or higher
Compatible up to:6.7.1
Released:07 June 2018
Downloads:2929459
Last Updated:10 December 2024
Ratings:
4.7
(4.7 star out of 5)

The Lowdown:

This is an interesting one – you go into your theme settings with this plugin, and create your landing page right in there. You can choose any page to create your landing page with Nimble, and the free version gives you a few templates to work off of.

Honestly, the way this is set up reminds me of Elementor – though you have to shuffle between quite a few menu options to swap between the columns and what not. Though it is worth it, since once you are in the widget area you don't have to flip more than one time.

You can also add sections by pressing the little plus button, and the menu on the side flips to the ‘section' menu automatically for you, keeping you from having to flip through the menu yourself!

There is another really cool option under the general settings ‘options' area for the plugin, where you can choose to remove all Nimble Data – it double checks to make sure you want to remove everything, but it does remove everything when tell it to! So if you find that you really don't like what you created, you can delete it without having to go in and delete the page, just tell the plugin to delete EVERYthing for you!

I really like this one, and even though it has a pro option, their prices are great! only $39 for a single site/year, or 149 for a lifetime – or $79 for unlimited sites/year, 249 for a lifetime of unlimited sites!! Just because of the awesome prices, and the lifetime option, this one gets the dragon roar !
