The Lowdown:
From time to time you will encounter issues with your WP-Cron and need to know what happening with it. You may have stuck events or you may want to delete or add new schedules to your cron list.

Use this to manage aspects of your cron including disabling the WP cron and using a real cron job though your server.

The Lowdown:
I have reviewed this plugin in the past as a simple way to clean up your database but it looks like they have stepped up their game and ventured into the caching business. WP-Optimize now not only cleans your database but you can use it to compress your images and to cache your website.

Aside from doing the DB cleanup you can now
compress PNG, JPG, GIF, BMP and TIF pictures up to 5MG in size, and it’s packed with other useful features, including:

  • Bulk compression, allowing you to compress multiple existing images at the same time.
  • Intelligent, multi-pass lossy compression algorithm, which gives you twice the compression with much less loss of resolution.
  • ‘Restore Originals’ function, which allows you to retrieve or revert back to your original images at any point.
  • Auto-compress function, which automatically compress images as they’re added to the site.
  • EXIF Data-Keeping means image information is retained even once the image is compressed.
  • ‘Compress Big Files function’ allowing you to compress images up to 64MB- much higher than any other plugin.

You can also cache your WordPress posts and pages as static files, thus reducing the processing load on the web server (and preventing overload if PHP and MySQL are used), which helps to improves your website’s speed and performance.
With minimal configuration, the plugin is easy to use and has a load of useful features, including:

  • Cache Preloading to ensure the cache is always ready and loaded
  • Gzip Compression of HTML, JavaScript, and CSS to reduces site load time.
  • Device-Specific Cache to ensure the optimized page version is always served.
  • Advanced Exclude Rules, so that you can cache almost anything by excluding logged in users, specific URLs or cookies.
  • Browser Cache to instruct client browsers to reuse resources (HTML, CSS, JS) if no changes were made since the last request.

Some nice improvements to this plugin.

ClassicPress Options

Since the release of Gutenberg, and its fallout, ClassicPress has garnered a lot of attention. This is a fork of WordPress and is focused on Business Websites and is looking pretty good. It does seem in the past few months ClassicPress is coming into its own a bit and with some plugins now being created specifically for ClassicPress I do believe it has a future.

One thing I am looking forward to in the ClassicPress World is the expansion of the number of ClassicPress specific plugins and their own repository. Currently there are not a lot of ClassicPress specific plugins but I do know it is going to grow and I'll have to expand this segment then. Who knows, it could take over the whole show.

This week for ClassicPress I have:

News:
You can now listen to the Interview with James Nylen and Michelle Coe from ClassicPress Two of the Leads for the ClassicPress Team, Michelle Coe (lead designer), and James Nylen (lead developer) it is a great interview so follow the link to listen to it.
